Staff Leadership

Directing our quest for transformative cancer care

Lewis J. Kampel, MD

Medical Director

Dr. Lewis J. Kampel was born in Brooklyn, New York and grew up in Newark, New Jersey. He received his undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey and his medical degree from the Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. After post graduate training in Internal Medicine he served for two years in the U.S. Army at Headquarters Allied Forces Central Europe in the Netherlands. After military service he completed a Fellowship in Medical Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York and was certified in both Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology.

Between 1975 and 1973 he was in private practice in New Jersey where he also served as Chairman of Internal Medicine at JFK Medical Center in Edison and Chief of Hematology\Oncology at Rahway Hospital in Rahway for several years.

In 1993 Dr. Kampel returned to Memorial Sloan Kettering and concentrated on prostate cancer, a disease with a disparate impact on African American and Caribbean men. His interest in that problem led to a collaboration with representatives of the Government of Jamaica and the Jamaican community in New York seeking to develop programs that might identify the cause and encourage earlier diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer in this high risk group of men.

Dr. Kampel was a leader the Quality Assurance program at Memorial Sloan Kettering, serving first as Chair of the Department of Medicine QA committee, and then as Chair of the Hospital QA Committee. In that capacity he was responsible for the monitoring of the quality of care and for efforts to improve it.

Dr. Kampel joined the Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care in February of 2017 as Director. He is very enthusiastic about the opportunity to better identify and meet the cancer care needs of this community.
